France cannot replicate PSG style, insists Deschamps
Several French attackers helped PSG to European glory, but Didier Deschamps does not foresee a major impact on the national team.
Despite being able to call upon Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola, France cannot replicate Paris Saint-Germain's style of play under Luis Enrique.
That is the view of Les Blues' head coach Didier Deschamps, who is preparing to lead his team into a Nations League semi-final showdown with Spain on Thursday.
PSG swept the competition aside as they won the Champions League for the first time, having also won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France in Luis Enrique's second season.
They hammered Inter 5-0 in last week's final, the biggest margin of victory ever recorded in a European Cup or Champions League showpiece.
In that match, Doue became the first player to ever record three goal involvements in a Champions League final, scoring twice and assisting Achraf Hakimi's opener, while Dembele registered two assists and Barcola impressed from the bench.
PSG have won plaudits for adopting a free-flowing attacking style in the aftermath of Kylian Mbappe's move to Real Madrid, but Deschamps does not feel their success will have any impact on the national team.
He told The Athletic: "I'm not complaining about the players I have, but Hakimi is not French, Marquinhos is not French, (Willian) Pacho is not French, Vitinha is not French, none of the midfielders are French. (Khvicha) Kvaratskhelia is Georgian.
"You can't copy and paste things, even though what they've done is very good. It works very well and it proves Luis Enrique right. Is it possible to replicate it? Yes. Is there as much time? No. There's much less time.
"I'd prefer to have 10 players from two clubs than 10 players from eight clubs. They have an automatic understanding and what they do with their clubs serves the national team, but that's not always the case.
"Even with the players I can pick... if we take the example of Doue and Barcola, they're in competition.
"Sometimes they play together, but sometimes one starts and the other one comes on. It's difficult to transpose things.
"In a club, you have the whole week and you're playing matches together one after the other, so it's not the same."
On Thursday, France will be reunited with the side that ended their hopes of Euro 2024 success, with Lamine Yamal's wondergoal helping Spain past Les Blues in the semi-finals of that competition.
Yamal backed up that international success with 18 goals and 21 assists for Barcelona as they won LaLiga and the Copa del Rey in 2024-25, leading Deschamps to compare the teenage winger to Mbappe.
"Yamal is one of those extraordinary players," Deschamps said. "You only ever get two or three of them at the same time. He does it match after match and he's still young.
"But to take the example of other players, Kylian is older, but at 18, he was doing things like Yamal. They're able to make a mark on football very young with what they do."
