Derek McInnes' nightmare start as Rangers manager continued as they were dumped out of the Europa League in the third qualifying round, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Jagiellonia Bialystok following a 1-1 draw at Ibrox Stadium.

Having seen his team squander a 1-0 advantage to lose 2-1 in last week's first leg in Poland, McInnes cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines as Rangers let another lead slip. 

Lawrence Shankland's first-half penalty had the Glasgow giants thinking about extra time, but Nik Prelec's towering header in the 65th minute ensured Rangers will drop into the Conference League play-off round.

With Rangers also having just a solitary point on the board after two Scottish Premiership games, the pressure is already mounting on McInnes ahead of Sunday's League Cup tie against St. Mirren.

An end-to-end start to Thursday's game saw Shankland denied by Slawomir Abramowicz before Jesus Imaz rifled an effort off the inside of the post for Jagiellonia, but Rangers drew level on aggregate in the 19th minute.

After a VAR review, former Celtic centre-back Yuki Kobayashi was penalised for handball from Daisuke Yokota's right-wing cross, and Shankland kept his cool from the resulting spot-kick to score his first goal since following McInnes to Ibrox from Hearts.

Rangers never truly felt in control, though, and having missed a decent chance on the slide earlier on, Prelec made no mistake when Anders Klynge lifted an inch-perfect cross onto his head at the far post 20 minutes into the second half.

Rangers grew desperate in their bid to force extra time, with Bojan Miovski miscuing with a header and Vanja Dragojevic curling narrowly wide of the right-hand post, and boos echoed around Ibrox when the final whistle brought an end to their Europa League hopes. 

Rangers hit new low

Twelve months ago, Russell Martin got off to a dismal start in the Rangers dugout, from which he could not recover. He failed to win any of his first five Premiership games and oversaw a Champions League play-off round defeat to Club Brugge.

McInnes has only had four games in charge, but after overseeing an even earlier exit from Europe's second-tier competition, he must be feeling the heat.

And some might wonder whether Thursday's disappointment was self-inflicted, as the Rangers boss switched to a four-man backline with the half-time introduction of Ross McCrorie, having edged the first period while playing with a back three. 

McInnes is now winless in four matches with Rangers in all competitions (D2 L2), though his team can still salvage a spot in the Conference League proper if they beat Czech side Jablonec in a play-off later this month.
