Donnarumma done a runner from Milan
Gianluigi Donnarumma has opted not to renew his AC Milan contract.
Gianluigi Donnarumma will not sign a renewal with AC Milan, the Serie A club confirmed.
The prodigiously talented 'keeper, viewed as the natural heir to Gianluigi Buffon for Italy, made his Milan debut as a 16 year-old in October 2015, immediately catching the eye for his agility, size and composure.
Now 18, Donnarumma has played 68 matches for the Rossoneri, which considered him a star around which to rebuild its squad long into the future.
Those plans were dashed on Friday morning, with Donnarumma confirming he will not renew his deal at the club, amid interest from Juventus and Real Madrid, among others.
“We are disheartened. [Agent] Mino Raiola has conveyed to me Donnarumma’s decision not to renew," Milan director Marco Fassone told Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport. "It’s his final decision.
“In the past few days, sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli made a very big offer to the player, who evaluated it and today he informed us that he did not intend to renew.
"We were confident that Gigio would be the goalkeeper of this new Milan; a pillar upon which we would build, but now we have to re-evaluate everything.
“This decision, taken by the player and his agent, is disappointing, but we have to move on; Milan move on.”
