Como win reignites Champions League hopes
Como got back to winning ways in Serie A and leapfrogged Roma back into fifth place after a comfortable 2-0 win over Genoa.
Tasos Douvikas and Assane Diao were on the scoresheet in either half as Cesc Fabregas’ side put the pressure back on Juventus ahead of its game at AC Milan later in the day.
Como made a bright start and was rewarded just 10 minutes in as Douvikas peeled off the back of his defender to meet Lucas da Cunha’s stunning cross, and nod back across goal.
Nico Paz then dragged wide after dancing through Genoa’s defence, and his glancing header bounced off the right post in the 34th minute as Como continued to push for a second.
Junior Messias saw a close-range shot smothered by Jean Butez as Genoa sought a response, but Como soon doubled its advantage.
Maxence Caqueret did well to help a dinked cross on in the 68th minute, and Diao was on hand at the far post to nod in.
Messias blazed a late chance over the bar as Genoa’s attempts at a comeback felt short, and Como held on for all three points and a clean sheet.
There was a sour note for Como, howeverm as Fabregas confirmed Paz was taken to hospital after leaving the field because he couldn't see properly.
Paz was substituted at half-time after a clash of heads with Genoa defender Alessandro Marcandalli.
The 21-year-old subsequently told medical staff he was struggling to see properly out of one eye, so was taken to hospital for further observation.
Paz, who has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists for Como in all competitions this season, was released after he was given a clean bill of health.
"Nico is doing better," Fabregas revealed. "He is in hospital, and they are evaluating him there.
"He was struggling to see properly. In any case, it is important for us to be able to find many different solutions from the team."
