Smalling's Bali getaway ends in hospital
Pictures of Chris Smalling with a head injury have been explained by Manchester United, which says the defender fainted due to food poisoning and has received treatment in hospital.
The England international, 26, is on vacation in Bali, Indonesia, after his country's elimination from UEFA EURO 2016.
Pictures emerged on social media appearing to show Smalling lying on a hospital bed signing autographs with a bandage around his head and a neck support.
United has confirmed this was after Smalling fainted, having suffered from food poisoning, and provided an update to say the centre back is now feeling fine.
The club's statement read: "Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday. The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine."
United confirmed that Smalling will return to the club for preseason training later in July as planned.
Fans on social media were skeptical over United's claim, considering the extent of his facial injuries.
