Nuno not getting carried away after West Ham's victory over Sunderland
West Ham moved within two points of safety in the Premier League after beating Sunderland, but Nuno Espirito Santo remained calm.
Nuno Espirito Santo insisted that he would not be getting carried away by West Ham's win over Sunderland as he turned his attention to the Hammers' next Premier League clash.
Nuno watched on as West Ham made it three consecutive victories in all competitions with a 3-1 triumph at London Stadium, with all three goals coming in the first half.
Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring with a towering header before captain Jarrod Bowen doubled the Hammers' lead from the penalty spot in the 28th minute.
The hosts concluded a dominant first period in style through Mateus Fernandes' 30-yard stunner, but Sunderland pulled one back thanks to Brian Brobbey's 66th-minute header.
West Ham saw Fernandes hit the woodwork while Luke O'Nien and Wilson Isidor came close at the other end, but the Hammers were able to hold on for a huge three points.
Nuno's side are now just two points adrift of Nottingham Forest in 17th place, with Sean Dyche's team taking on Brentford on Sunday with a chance to extend that gap.
"You know that football is [in] the present. What we did today was great," Nuno said. "Let's have a good weekend and prepare for the next one.
"It's going to be very tough [at Chelsea], but we're going to put up a fight."
While there was positivity after the game, West Ham have now conceded in 20 consecutive Premier League games for the second time (24 in a row in November 2008).
Indeed, only Southampton and Wolves (both three times) have had more 20+ runs in the competition without a clean sheet. Luckily, their quality in the final third shone through.
Bowen, who teed up Summerville for the first goal of the match, has now scored and assisted in 11 different Premier League games for West Ham, the most of any player for the club, overtaking Paolo Di Canio (10).
The England international also became the West Ham player with the outright most goal involvements in Premier League history (103 – 63 goals, 40 assists), moving clear of Michail Antonio (101 – 68 goals, 33 assists).
And with confidence now bubbling among the West Ham squad, Bowen insists he and his team-mates are already looking forward to next weekend’s London derby at Chelsea.
“My message to the players before the game was to be a side that enjoys winning, to go back-to-back and to build that consistency, because top teams never let off," he said.
"Top teams turn up in every single game and win in different ways, so we've got to keep trying to do that.
"We've done it over the last few weeks, and the main thing is we’re winning games. So, long may that continue and for sure we'll be looking to win at Chelsea."
For Sunderland, meanwhile, they missed the chance to move into the top five of the Premier League as their poor recent form in the top flight continued in the capital.
The Black Cats are now winless in seven consecutive Premier League away games (D3 L4) for the first time since October 2016 (D3 L4).
They have also lost consecutive away games in the competition while conceding 3+ goals for the first time since December 2016.
"It's tough to say, because there are probably multiple reasons," Le Bris said when asked why his side could not click into gear on Saturday.
"At least it shows that when you are not at the level that the league will punish you.
"[We need to show] Humility, hard work, accept the tough period. We haven't experienced this much, but we are still a newly promoted side.
"It is normal to have this kind of experience. Don't get too emotional, stay composed, not too high and not too low and move forward."
