Guardiola hails 'demanding' Guehi in Man City debut
Marc Guehi made a winning start to life with Manchester City, helping them keep a clean sheet in their 2-0 win over Wolves.
Pep Guardiola has praised the "demanding" nature of Marc Guehi after he helped Manchester City beat Wolves 2-0 on his debut.
First-half goals from Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo secured all three points at the Etihad Stadium, with the latter scoring on his home Premier League debut for the club.
Semenyo squandered an early chance for City when Guehi, who completed more passes than any other City player (95), found the winger with a cross-field pass.
City are now unbeaten in their last 31 Premier League games against opponents starting the day bottom of the table (W25 D6) since a 1-2 defeat to West Brom in December 2008.
And Guardiola was full of praise for Guehi as his side registered their first league win of 2026.
The Spaniard told BBC Match of the Day: "We won against a team who were unbeaten in the last four or five games, so pretty pleased.
"The captain of Crystal Palace has to be something special. Really pleased for him. He is so demanding for ourselves to do better. Good players adapt quick and understand the game, so that's why."
And speaking about his own performance, Guehi added: "It was OK from my part, I have got a lot of learning to do to get up to speed. There's a lot of details and positioning and certain things, but it has been really exciting.
"There's a good mentality about the group, important that the focus is on the next game, making sure we get the win. We need the mentality and the intensity within the side, and hopefully we will keep that going."
Wolves have eight points in 23 Premier League games this season (W1 D5 L17), the fifth-lowest ever by a side after 23 matches of an English top-flight campaign (assuming all wins were worth three points).
This was Rob Edwards' 50th Premier League game as a manager (38 with Luton Town, 12 with Wolves), and his 32nd defeat (W7 D11); only Mick McCarthy (38) and Daniel Farke (35) have ever lost more of their first 50 matches as a manager in the competition.
Edwards was not completely dissatisfied with Wolves' performance, but he felt Marmoush's sixth-minute strike came too early.
"It was a tough challenge, hard when you go 1-0 down so early on. The players did what we asked, we tried to be brave," he told Sky Sports.
"We felt relatively comfortable; they didn't create too many moments. We pushed, and we created some chances.
"We had a few shots, but in the end, we weren't able to break through. We kept them relatively quiet and really grew into the game well."
