Carrick to stay as Manchester United head coach
Manchester United has confirmed Michael Carrick will stay on as the club's permanent head coach.
The 44-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Old Trafford, seeing him through to June 2028.
Carrick took over after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January, originally on an interim basis to the end of the season, and has overseen a brilliant second half of the 2025-2026 Premier League campaign, securing United UEFA Champions League football.
It has already confirmed third place with a game to spare, its best finish since 2022-2023, when it finished in the same position.
Since Carrick's first game in charge – a 2-1 Manchester derby win on 18 January (AEST) – no team has won more games (11) or points (36) than United in the Premier League, while only Manchester City (31) has scored more goals (30).
"From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United," Carrick said.
"Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.
"Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.
"Now it's time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again."
Carrick has won 11 of his 16 games in charge of United, losing only twice.
He has the best points-per-game average of any manager in the Premier League this season (2.25 – P16 W11 D3 L2). It is the best by any United manager in a league season since Sir Alex Ferguson's final campaign in 2012-2013 (2.34).
He is also up for the Premier League manager of the year award, alongside Guardiola, who confirmed he would be leaving Man City after 10 years on Friday, Mikel Arteta (Arsenal), Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), Keith Andrews (Brentford) and Regis Le Bris (Sunderland).
United will finish its campaign away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday (AEST). It is looking to complete the double over Brighton for the first time since 2020-2021, but has lost six of its past eight league matches against the Seagulls.
