Inter Miami to name new stand after Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi will have the rare honour of playing in front of a stand bearing his name when Inter Miami's new stadium opens next week.
Miami is due to play its first game at the 26,700-capacity Nu Stadium on 5 April (AEDT), against Austin FC.
The MLS Cup champion has played its first five games of the season on the road, having used Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale as a temporary home since its inaugural campaign in 2020.
Messi, who is already Miami's all-time leader for both goals and assists, scoring 82 goals and creating 53 since arriving in Florida in 2023, will play in front of a stand bearing his name.
A statement read: "Traditionally, tributes look to the past. They are built from nostalgia. From memory. This one is different.
"This one is born from the present. From what is happening right now. From what you feel every time Leo steps onto the pitch.
"Recognising someone is not always about closing a chapter. Sometimes it is about realising you are witnessing something unique."
Miami has taken 10 points from its first five games in MLS this year to sit third in the Eastern Conference, behind Nashville SC and New York City FC.
