New York City FC hires Patrick Vieira as coach
The former France star and Manchester City youth coach has signed a three-year contract with the MLS club, taking over for Jason Kreis.
After one year with an established MLS mind at the helm, New York City FC has turned to its European roots for the club's next head coach, announcing the appointment of former France and Arsenal star Patrick Vieira as its new coach.
Vieira, who was the Manchester City youth coach, takes over the post previously occupied by Jason Kreis. Vieira, who has signed a three-year contract, will officially start the job on 1 January.
"This established football set-up, together with a passionate and loyal fan base, located in a special city which I know well, makes for an unparalleled opportunity that I am delighted to seize with both hands," Vieira said via a news release. "I cannot wait to get started."
Vieira retired in 2011 after a storied playing career that saw him win the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the 2000 European championship and multiple club honours during stints with AC Milan, Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City. He has spent the past four years working in the youth set-up of Manchester City, New York City FC's parent club.
He takes over a team that had a record of 10-17-7 during its expansion campaign under long-time Real Salt Lake coach Kreis, finishing 12 points shy of the Eastern Conference's final play-off berth.
"Patrick was a legendary player and has all the characteristics required to make a fantastic head coach," sporting director Claudio Reyna said.
"His exemplary drive, passion and dedication have always marked him out as a rare talent and all of those qualities, alongside his understanding of the game, make him a natural choice."
