Newport wins penalty shootout thriller to make Carabao Cup
Newport County sealed its place in the first round of the Carabao Cup with a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Barnet, handing manager Dave Hughes his first competitive win in charge.
The Exiles took control in the first half at The Hive, with goals from Cameron Antwi and Michael Reindorf putting them 2-0 up against last season’s National League champion.
Barnet mounted a late comeback, with Ryan Galvin finding the net deep into stoppage time before Rhys Brown levelled in the dying moments to force penalties.
Goalkeeper Nik Tzanev emerged as the hero, saving Kane Smith’s spot-kick, before Cameron Evans converted the decisive penalty to secure Newport’s progression.
County will host EFL Championship side Millwall in the first round.
