Broadhead opens Wrexham account in historic win
Club record signing Nathan Broadhead scored his first goals for Wrexham as it beat Reading 2-0 in the Carabao Cup to reach the fourth round for the first time in almost half a century.
The EFL Championship side from north Wales has ticked off more than a few major milestones since being taken over by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, including three successive promotions.
Now a first appearance in the League Cup fourth round since 1977 marks another.
After a first half that saw both sides create chances but fail to finish them, Wrexham improved significantly after the break and went ahead on 57 minutes when reacted quickest to a blocked shot inside the box and fired home with power.
His second came from a header on 70 minutes which bounced down off the bar, and was confirmed to have crossed the line after it initially looked as if it might have stayed out.
The Royals loolked lively throughout, but the EFL League One side was unable to finish the few opportunities it created.
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson was thrilled to have made more history with the club he has managed since its superstar takeover, and revealed he had told his side about the chance it had to make more history by reaching the fourth round.
"It's great, I spoke to the lads about that yesterday. On this journey that the club's on, to create bits of history along the way is fantastic. I'm really pleased to get through," he said.
"No game is ever easy and Reading showed tonight what good young players they've got.
"They've got some talent, their academy has kept that club going over the last few troubled years they've had. But I'm very pleased to progress and there's obviously a lot of positives for us tonight."
