Alonso reveals how Vinicius apologised to Madrid
Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Vinicius Junior's Clasico tantrum has been swept under the rug after a speech from the Brazilian to his Real Madrid team-mates ahead of this weekend's fixture against Valencia.
Vinicius was replaced in the 72nd minute of Madrid's 2-1 win over Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu last week, but the result was overshadowed by the Brazilian's antics.
After coming off for Rodrygo, Vinicius reacted furiously about the decision to withdraw him, with reports suggesting a rift in his relationship with Los Blancos boss Alonso.
It was also suggested that the 25-year-old said he would leave Madrid, but he issued a public apology for his behaviour in midweek.
Madrid returns to LaLiga action this Sunday (AEDT) against Valencia, and Alonso insisted that there was no bad blood between him and the player.
"We had a meeting with everyone, and Vinicius was impeccable," Alonso revealed. "He spoke honestly and was very good. For me, it is settled.
"It was a very valuable, very positive statement. He showed his honesty; he spoke from the heart.
"The most important thing is what he said, and I was very satisfied. Since Wednesday, the issue has been closed. No retaliation."
When pressed further on the matter, Alonso added: "I think I have already given enough explanations. I respect that your focus is there. It was closed on Wednesday.
"We are coming from a very good week. What worries me is Valencia. I understand you, but understand me."
Vinicius has played 13 times for Madrid this season in all competitions, featuring from the start 10 times, scoring five goals and assisting four more.
Ahead of facing Valencia, against which Madrid has dropped points in three of their past five LaLiga games meetings, Alonso is hoping Vinicius can shine once again.
Vinicius has scored nine goals in 12 top-flight appearances against Valencia, his best tally against a single team in the competition.
"I see him very [Vinicius] focused, with a lot of desire. The other day he played a great game," Alonso said.
"I think the team and everyone, Vinicius, is focused on the most important thing. Everyone wants to be on the pitch. In approach, it is the same. We want to go in a safe way."
The Madrid boss also explained that despite recent off-field issues, the dressing room remains a positive environment.
"Being myself. The most important thing is to be authentic, not to try to impersonate anything," Alonso said of how he is managing the dressing room.
"Always think about the best for the team. Always have a good relationship, with respect, but knowing that not everyone is the same. You have to have emotional intelligence."
As well as the Vinicius drama, Alonso also said while the Clasico victory was a huge boost, it is now time to put it in the past and focus on what's ahead.
"Before the Clasico, we talked about it, which had more value. A victory of that size was important for the team's confidence. But it is time to forget it," he said.
"We have to continue to face every game. When we lower that preparation a little, we will lose points. And we don't want that to happen. I'm fine."
Asked if he had rewatched the Clasico back, Alonso said: "Of course. Many of the things we proposed went well. The team showed a lot of solidity.
"And we were really looking forward to it. That was seen in the boys. They were anticipating the situation. When we are strong, we take the initiative."
Kylian Mbappe's Clasico goal continued his fine start to 2025-2026, taking his tally to 11, a total only bettered by Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (12) across Europe's top five leagues.
He also continued his remarkable record against Barcelona, becoming just the third player to score in four consecutive Clasico fixtures across all competitions in the 21st Century.
The Frenchman is, however, the only outfield player to have started in every single game, and supporters are becoming concerned about Mbappe's workload.
"It always worries me. Not to squeeze the players too much. You also have to know the efforts, the demands," Alonso added.
"There are times when you have to manage those moments. With Kylian, so far it has been like this, but we will see for the future.
"He scored the goals and will score them. Their day-to-day life is very good. He is assuming it with a lot of maturity, and that is very important.
"Then we have to accompany the team to score the goals."
