Roma spoils welcome party at Everton's new home
Everton's life at its brand new home didn't start well as Serie A side Roma spoiled the party at Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 1-0 win in a pre-season friendly.
Matias Soule scored the winner in the 70th minute of the match, curling a shot past Jordan Pickford from the edge of the box to seal a result the Italian side probably deserved.
The Toffees, who left former home Goodison Park at the end of last season, started brightly as manager David Moyes looked to refine his line-up ahead of the new Premier League season.
But when the chance came, Everton's finishing proved inadequate and it paid the price of that profiglacy when Soule buried the winner 20 minutes from time.
Roma, under the guidance of coach Gian Piero Gasperini this season, faces Bologna in its Serie A opener on 24 August (AEST), while Everton will start its league season against newly promoted Leeds United on 19 August at Elland Road.
