Koumas late show seals draw for Ghana
Wales rescued a 1-1 draw against Ghana thanks to Lewis Koumas's first international goal.
Ghana, drawn into England's group at the 2026 World Cup, was playing its final warm-up match before the tournament.
The Black Stars took the lead in the 66th minute of a low-key encounter in Cardiff, with substitute Caleb Yirenkyi bundling home from close range after initially hitting the post following great work from Ernest Nuamah, whose shot was parried back out into the area.
Yet Craig Bellamy's Wales, which failed to qualify for the World Cup, piled on the pressure and found an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time.
Koumas, son of former Wales midfielder Jason, was on hand to meet Neco Williams's right-wing cross and direct a header beyond Benjamin Asare.
Antoine Semenyo has scored just once across his last 27 international appearances, and despite being Ghana's star name, the Manchester City attacker was not called upon from the bench by Carlos Queiroz, who was facing Wales for the first time.
Wales takes on Romania in its next friendly, while Ghana will focus on preparing for its Group L opener against Panama on 17 June.
Koumas scored his first goal for Wales on what was his 11th appearance, with his effort coming 17 years and 286 days after his father scored his last goal for the nation (against Georgia in 2008).
He had three shots after coming on in the 60th minute, with that tally bettered only by Dan James, who struck the woodwork twice.
Wales has won just one of its last 12 friendlies (D7 L4), failing to win any of its last six since a 4-0 win against Gibraltar in October 2023, while it has failed to win any of its first three matches of a calendar year (D3) for the first time since 2016 under Chris Coleman (D1 L2).
There was a slice of history for Jordan Ayew, who made his 120th appearance for Ghana, moving level with his brother Andre as the joint all-time appearance maker for the Black Stars, winless in all 18 of their away games against European nations.
