Yengi scores on debut as Socceroos draw with Swiss
Tete Yengi was on target for Australia as it came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Switzerland in the teams' final warm-up game ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Dan Ndoye's first-half strike for Switzerland was cancelled out by Yengi, making his debut for the Socceroos, just before the hour mark, but neither side could find a winner at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
Yengi could have scored within the opening five minutes, but saw his header from Nestory Irankunda's cross fly wide, while Ndoye also saw an effort smothered by Patrick Beach at the other end.
Switzerland eventually broke the deadlock in the 14th minute as Ndoye took in a brilliant pass from Granit Xhaka before slotting into the bottom-right corner from inside the box.
Ndoye had another great chance on the stroke of half-time, but was denied by the legs of Beach, and Switzerland was made to rue that miss as Yengi tapped into an unguarded net from Connor Metcalfe's centre after the break.
Switzerland looked more likely to score the winner, and perhaps should have through substitute Cedric Itten in the 79th minute, but his header from Miro Muheim's cross went narrowly over the crossbar.
Yengi was delighted to have scored on his debut, describing it as an amazing feeling.
"You work hard for moments like this ," he said. "I'm happy to help the team today and get my first game, first of all, and also my first goal.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity and hopefully now we can go into the World Cup with a positive feeling."
Yengi said the match had been difficult against a strong Swiss outfit.
"[Switzerland is] a great team team with a lot of experienced players," he added.
"When they're on the ball it's difficult. They can go in behind, they can come to feet, so we had to do a lot of defending.
"But I felt like we grew into the game. Second half, we got on the ball more and we created some opportunities, and that's how I got my goal."
Popovic said the front three had found it difficult playing for the first time together, which led to a disjointed display in the first half, but he was happy with how his side responded to Switzerland going ahead.
"They settled in the second half Nestor [Nestory Irankunda] got better, Tete [Yengi] got better, Connor [Metcalfe] did really well when he came on, and that helped us build the play a bit better and make better decisions."
Popovic was in no doubt his side got what it needed from the game in sticky conditions under the Californian sun.
"This all plays a part in the experience for the players, and it's nice not to have any injuries after this game,. That was the most important part," he said.
"We were competitive and we scored a really nice goal, so I'm happy and looking forward to next week."
The Socceroos will play in Group D with co-host United States, Paraguay and Turkey, their first opponent next Sunday, 14 June, in Vancouver, Canada.
Switzerland is in Group B with another co-host in Canada as well as 2022 FIFA World Cup host Qatar and European neighbour Bosnia and Herzegovina.
