Queiroz named Ghana coach ahead of World Cup
Ghana has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach, the country’s football association has announced, with the Portuguese set to make his fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance.
Queiroz, 73, left his role as Oman coach last month after the side failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana was left without a coach 72 days before the FIFA World Cup kicks off after parting company with Otto Addo after friendly defeats by Austria and Germany in March.
“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars,” a Ghana Football Association statement read.
Queiroz led Portugal to the Round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and later coached Iran at the last three editions of the tournament, recording three wins in 13 matches.
Born in Mozambique, the former goalkeeper has also held coaching positions with Egypt, Japan, Colombia, and South Africa, and previously led Portugal in the early 1990s.
"It is with a deep sense of gratitude to GFA, responsibility and humility that I embrace this new chapter with the National Football Team of Ghana," Queiroz said.
"Football has given me a lifetime of challenges, lessons, and unforgettable journeys, all over the world.
"Today, I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul.
"I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future. Together, with unity, discipline, and ambition, we will work to honour the expectations of a great football nation.
"This is not just another job — it is a mission. And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of people.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, England and Panama.
It will face Mexico and Wales in two friendlies before the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign begins.
