Neymar signals Brazil farewell after shock exit
Neymar hinted he may have played his final match for Brazil after scoring in its upset defeat to Norway in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The forward converted a stoppage-time penalty in Brazil's 2-1 loss, a result that eliminated the five-time champion and extended their wait for a sixth World Cup title.
Speaking briefly after the match to Bruno Formiga, a pundit on Brazilian television, Neymar indicated that his tenure with Brazil had come to an end.
"I tried, I tried ... Now it's over. I started here, I finished here," Neymar said, referring to the stadium in New Jersey, where he made his Brazil debut in a friendly against United States in 2010.
The 34-year-old was moved to tears after the match. It was the national team's worst FIFA World Cup performance since 1990.
Brazil is now heading towards its longest spell without a FIFA World Cup title since it first won the tournament.
By 2030, it will have gone 28 years without lifting the trophy.
If Neymar confirms his international retirement, he will end his Brazil career with 80 goals and 58 assists in 130 appearances.
Neymar has won multiple titles at club level but his only senior trophy with Brazil was the 2013 Confederations Cup.
Norway remains the only team that Brazil has faced and failed to beat, with this being the fifth meeting between the two nations, and there have been three wins for Norway, with two draws.
"Obviously, everyone is deeply disappointed, considering what happened," Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
"I don't think we have had a spectacular [FIFA] World Cup, but we had a good one. I think we even deserved to win the game [against Norway].
"You have to digest a defeat like this. This has been a new adventure. Now we need to keep earning our places, keep trying to improve.
"What I can say, what we can do and what we are going to do, is keep working hard for the national team, keep trying to improve and find new ideas.
"I think we have done a good job, but this is football, and this is sport. You just have to deal with it, deal with the sadness and the taste of defeat.
"I am very much used to this, and we will handle this. We will use it as fuel going forward."
