Injured Henderson back with England after surgery
Jordan Henderson is already switching focus to England's 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Norway, despite his tournament-ending arm injury.
Henderson was an unused substitute as England saw out a memorable 3-2 win over Mexico in the Round of 16.
Yet in the celebrations after the match, Henderson slipped and fell over the advertising boards, landing heavily and sustaining a broken arm in the process that required surgery.
Henderson's tournament is now over, but the 36-year-old, who featured for only six minutes for England, suggested he will be staying with the England squad as it prepares for the latter stages of the competition.
"A night to remember that's for sure. What an incredible performance against all the different challenges," Henderson posted on social media.
"So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday [Sunay AEST]."
Only Brazil and Germany have qualified for more FIFA World Cup quarter-finals than England, with this set to be the Three Lions' 11th appearance at this stage in the competition. Brazil and Germany, both out of the competition in 2026, have 14 appearances in the last eight.
But England has progressed from just three of those previous quarter-final matches and has been eliminated from five of its past six FIFA World Cup knockout round matches against European opposition.
Its most recent such defeat was a 2-1 loss to France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 tournament. France went on to finish as runner-up in that tournament in Qatar, and could meet England in the final in 2026 if both progress through their respective sides of the draw.
