Chelsea stunned as Flamengo comes back to win
Group D was dealt an unexpected twist after Flamengo beat UEFA Conference League champion Chelsea in Philadelphia 3-1 at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Substitute Bruno Henrique made the difference for the Brazilain side as it came from behind to beat the 10-man Blues.
He scored one and assisted another as Flamengo's dominance, helped by Nicolas Jackson's red card, put it in control of Group D.
After a cagey start to the match, Neto was presented with a golden opportunity when Wesley Franca lost his footing on the halfway line, and the Portuguese winger burst forward to take advantage of the mistake, coolly finishing to the goalkeeper's left.
Flamengo pushed for an equaliser and almost got one before the break when Gerson directed a header towards goal, but Levi Colwill made a brilliant goalline clearance.
The Brazilian side had another great chance 10 minutes into the second half when an error from Reece James allowed Gerson to go through on goal, but the defender recovered to make a block before the rebound was put wide by Gonzalo Plata.
Flamengo finally got its deserved goal in the 62nd minute when Henrique tapped home from Plata's header at the back post.
It took the lead in similar fashion three minutes later, this time Henrique was the provider and his pass across goal was neatly finished by Danilo.
Things got worse for Chelsea when substitute Jackson was shown a straight red card for a poor tackle on Ayrton Lucas four minutes after coming on.
Wallace Yan then secured all three points for Flamengo in the 83rd minute, combining with Plata before firing past Robert Sanchez at the near post.
Chelsea's Marc Cucurella said his side looked to play more directly in this match, something that may need to change heading into its final group game.
"We can have the ball more," Cucurella said.
"It's true that we tried to play more direct, and did not have enough patience with the ball. That is something we can improve a lot. Now we have time to see the clips of the things we can do better in the next game.
"For the majority, we controlled the game well. When we conceded the first goal, I think they had this good feeling because their fans started to be loud, and immediately after, we conceded the second one. This is a thing that we have to improve.
"We need to control the game more, suffer in some moments, but the most important thing is that we have another game and if we win, we go through and that's it."
Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho believed it was Flamengo's trust in Filipe Luis's game plan which gave it the win against his old club.
"For the game and how it was, we played good football and did really well on the pitch," he said.
"When we had to wait, we waited. When we had to press, we put them in trouble. We worked a lot on how we could hurt them. We believe in what we do, and we push all together.
"We were really confident, and we know in these big games the details make the difference. Overall, we were really good in the first half, so we said, 'let's keep pushing'.
"We pushed in the first half, and it worked, so we knew we needed to do more in the second half, and that is what we did. We found the little spots that could hurt them.”
Chelsea's final group match is against ES Tunis, while Flamengo faces Los Angeles FC.
