Van Persie fired by Feyenoord after one season
Robin van Persie has been fired as coach of Eredivisie club Feyenoord after only one full season in charge and despite the club finishing second in the league standings, Dutch media reported on Monday (AEST).
Multiple outlets reported that the 42-year-old former Arsenal and Manchester United striker has been sacked despite having one more season on his contract, news that was confirmed later by the club.
The move follows the appointment of a new general manager Robert Eenhoorn and technical director Devy Rigaux at the club.
"Robin van Persie has given everything for the club in the past 1.5 years," Rigaux said through a statement on Feyenoord's website.
"He certainly deserves credit for ending a difficult season with second place in the end. With that, [UEFA] Champions League football was secured, which is, of course, very important.
"We have conducted a thorough analysis. We have included the development of the game delivered and the downward trend in terms of points, both in Europe and the Eredivisie.
"The conclusion was that it would be better to start next season with a new head coach."
Feyenoord finished 19 points behind runaway winner PSV Eindhoven and was inconsistent throughout the season with Van Persie being criticised for run-ins with players and persistent tinkering with the team, amid reports he had a chaotic management style.
