Luton suffers its second straight relegation
Luton Town has been relegated to EFL League One on goal difference after a 5-3 defeat by West Bromwich Albion ensured a second straight drop for the Hatters.
Tom Fellows and Callum Styles both scored braces for the Baggies and Luton's relegation was confirmed when Hull City leapfrogged them to survive after a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.
Luton, which was a Premier League club last season, had boosted survival hopes after a run of three straight victories.
But after a season in which it never truly got going, a defeat at The Hawthorns and Hull City's draw at Portsmouth, Luton's fate was sealed.
"It is a particularly painful moment for us and everyone associated with our football club," manager Matt Bloomfield said.
"[It was a] really disappointing performance, considering the day and the performance that we needed to get ourselves out of where we were.
"I don't know [where that performance came from]. The goals we gave away were so disappointing. We've been incredibly resilient in the last two months to really shore up at the back and, unfortunately today, it just wasn’t there.
"Sorry to our supporters for travelling up and down the country, supporting us this season. We understand their disappointment and anger right now."
"You've got to face the music," Luton skipper Carlton Morris said. "Ultimately, we've put ourselves in this situation, and we need to take accountability.
"It's tough to put into words. I feel sorry for the fans and also for the lads with the effort they've put in recently. We gave ourselves too much of a mountain to climb."
