Ipswich dishes up more humiliation for Blades
Jaden Philogene scored his first senior hat-trick as Ipswich Town demolished an abject Sheffield United 5-0 in another EFL Championship humiliation for the Blades.
The result heaped more pressure on Blades boss Ruben Selles as his side suffered a fifth straight defeat from the opening five games of the season, only the second time in the club's history it has started this poorly.
Philogene's first came in the 20th minute as he fired home confidently with his right foot from inside the box.
It wasn't until the 50th minute that he, and Ipswich, scored a second, Philogene again cutting in from the left flank, dribbling along the edge of the box before powering another right-foot rocket past Michael Cooper in the Sheffield United goal.
From there the floodgates opened.
George Hirst scored the third, shooting through Cooper's legs from a tight angle just after the hour mark before Phiolgene bagged his third with another powerful effort soon after.
Jack Clarke completed the rout with another shot through the legs of Cooper with 12 minutes still left on the clock.
Selles' side managed to stave off any further embarrassment, but that will do little to end speculation he will be relieved of his managerial duties before the Blades take to the field again.
They are rock bottom of the EFL Championship with zero points and a goal difference of minus 11 – far from the form expected of a side many had tipped to be pushing for promotion this season in the way they did last season.
For Ipswich, though, this was the first win of its season having drawn three and lost one of its previous four matches, and the three points lifted the Tractor Boys up to 11th on the table.
Boss Kieran McKenna will now look to build on this big win at home.
“You want to get that first win and we've been close a couple of times. This is a good win for us,” McKenna said.
“We felt like we weren't too far away and there's been some good things coming and a lot of it came out tonight.
“We've worked really hard with Jaden in pre-season and he's worked really hard as well. There had been some good signs but without the end-product.
“We know how hard the season is. It's good to get the first win but it's very much feet on the floor.”
Selles, meanwhile, is determined to turn United's form around as he insisted he is not worried about his future at the club.
“Obviously it's very difficult. We need to accept it and not give excuses and try and find a way out of the situation,” he said.
“I think the first half we were on top of the game and they had a couple of situations.
“The owners have been supporting me until today. I haven't spoken to them after the game. I'm not worried about that, I'm just worried about how we can do things better. I'm the first one to give pressure to myself.
“I believe in myself. I will always be in front of anything that has my name.
“We are not going to solve anything tonight but we have to analyse. The good thing about football is you have another game in seven days and it's another opportunity.”
