Wasteful Leverkusen sees lead cut to two points
Bundesliga leader Bayer Leverkusen was left to rue a stack of chances as it failed to get a result in a goalless stalemate with Borussia Moenchengladbach.
After Bayern Munich's win at Augsburg earlier in the day, Leverkusen saw its lead at the top of the table reduced to two points.
Xabi Alonso, who has been linked with the Liverpool job in the wake of Jurgen Klopp's announcement that he will leave the Reds at the end of the season, saw his side hold 70 per cent of possession in the first half and two good early opportunities for Florian Wirtz, but fail to crack open a disciplined Gladbach defence.
After the break, Leverkusen continued to dominate but also continued to squander good chances to break the deadlock, Jeremie Frimpong coming agonisingly close three times in a six-minute spell and Alejandro Grimaldo firing over the bar from close range.
A stoppage-time Nathan Tella shot from two metres was far too weak and completed a disappointing evening for the hosts.
