Mainz and Hamburg share the spoils
On loan Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira cancelled out Nadiem Amiri's opener as Hamburger SV took a point from their away day in Mainz.
Mainz and Hamburger SV couldn't be separated, with the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw at the Mewa Arena on a cold evening in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Entering the match, Mainz sought to further distance itself from the relegation zone, holding a two-point advantage over Werder Bremen, which sits in the playoff spot. Meanwhile, Hamburg were comfortably in mid-table, seeking the chance to climb closer to those fighting for the final European spots.
The visitors, sporting their 1887 game kit, which represented the number of Bundesliga games Hamburg had played, started the game on the front foot. Fabio Vieira was the first to test the Mainz goal as his effort from outside the box was parried by goalkeeper Daniel Batz.
Mainz's shotstopper would be called into action again on 21 minutes, this time a long-range effort, Warmed Omari stinging the palms of Batz. Robert Glatzel, moments later, put Batz to work, this time a simpler save for the keeper.
The hosts didn't have much to show offensively in the first half; however, Mainz would take the lead on the stroke of half-time. Danny da Costa's excellent ball into the box found Nadiem Amiri, whose first-time volley cannoned off the post and past Hamburg keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes.
Hamburg continued to work away at the Mainz defence, and on 64 minutes, they had their reward. Vieira's free-kick took a wicked deflection off the wall and beating the outstretched Batz.
Neither team could find a winner in the closing stages, ensuring Hamburg remains multiple games clear of the relegation zone while Mainz will have to see how the remaining fixtures result from the weekend's action.
