Last-gasp winner completes wild Bayern comeback
Lennart Karl's 99th-minute winner helped Bayern Munich produce a stunning late comeback as it moved 12 points clear at the Bundesliga summit with a 3-2 win over Freiburg.
Tom Bischof's brace had helped Vincent Kompany's side come from two goals down at Europa-Park Stadion, but Karl popped up with the decisive moment to seal a huge victory.
Philipp Treu squandered a huge chance to give Freiburg a 15th-minute lead as his first-time shot from Niklas Beste's cutback fizzed narrowly wide of Manuel Neuer's left post.
Bayern rarely troubled the Freiburg goal but almost entered half-time with the lead. However, Karl shot straight at Noah Atubolu as Bischof skewed his shot over the bar.
Freiburg deservedly led 39 seconds after the restart through Johan Manzambi, who curled a fine effort into the bottom-right corner that left Neuer stranded.
Holer should have put the game out of sight in the 54th minute after bundling his way into the box, but he dragged his shot wide, though he more than made up for that miss.
A teasing corner from Beste was not dealt with by Neuer, with the loose ball falling to Holer to strike into the net with the aid of a deflection from Kim Min-Jae on its way in.
However, Bayern reduced the deficit when Bischof's shot from distance nestled into the bottom-right corner, and the full-back completed the comeback in the second minute of second-half stoppage-time in similar fashion, this time finding the opposite corner with his weaker left foot.
But there was still time for late drama as Joshua Kimmich released Alphonso Davies, whose cross picked out Karl, who tapped home to spark wild scenes from the away fans.
Karl believes the nature of this victory was important ahead of a trip to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, having predicted he would get on the scoresheet.
“We spoke about that in the dressing room. It gives us a lot of confidence. It was very important. We actually feel unbeatable at the moment," Karl said.
“I'm very happy. It's an unbelievable feeling. I've always had it in my mind to score a late winner and take off my shirt.
“Thankfully it worked out, an incredible feeling. I had a bit of a feeling that I was going to score today. It happened and it was perfect."
