Last-gasp penalty snaps Leverkusen's unbeaten run
Fabian Rieder's stoppage-time spot-kick condemned Bayer Leverkusen to its first Bundesliga defeat in almost three months as Augsburg triumphed 2-1.
Leverkusen knew a victory would take it, at least temporarily, to within a point of the UEFA Champions League places.
But despite taking the lead and creating plenty of chances, Kasper Hjulmand's team was undone in the 97th minute when Rieder coolly slotted home from 12 yards.
Patrik Schick's fantastic header saw Leverkusen take a 12th-minute lead, yet Rieder swiftly equalised with a strike from the edge of the area after the hosts failed to clear their lines from a corner.
Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen pulled off some superb stops to keep Leverkusen at bay, making nine saves in total, though Mark Flekken also had to be on point at the other end to deny Augsburg a breakaway second.
However, with the match ebbing towards what would have been a frustrating draw for Leverkusen, Montrell Culbreath felled Uchenna Ogundu, and Rieder duly completed his double by sending Flekken the wrong way.
Defeat ended a seven-game unbeaten run in the league for Leverkusen, which sits sixth on the table.
