Kane cracker seals last-gasp win for Bayern
A spectacular stoppage-time winner from Harry Kane lifted the gloom at Bayern Munich as his double helped secure a 2-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig.
Bayern snapped a three-game losing run in all competitions to stay eight points off leader Bayer Leverkusen, days after the news that coach Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season.
Kane saw an early header parried on to the post by Janis Blaswich in the Leipzig goal in a first half that ended goalless, but he was not to be denined in the second period when he completed a quick break with a crisp finish after good early work from Jamal Musiala to put Bayern ahead in the 56th minute.
Leipzig levelled 20 minutes from time when Benjamin Sesko's shot was deflected in after the Slovenian had been denied earlier by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on two occasions.
As the match moved past the 90-minute mark, Kane came to the rescue once more, scoring his 27th league goal of the season when he drilled in a powerful shot past Blaswich to snatch all three points for the hosts.
Bayern should have been ahead in only the fifth minute. Raphael Guerrero dinked a cross in for Kane, but Blaswich was down smartly, pushing his header against a post before gathering at the second attempt.
Bayern would come to rue that missed opportunity as creating others against a well-organised Leipzig side, defending in numbers and relying solely on counters to provide its own threat, proved difficult.
Just before the break, Thomas Muller headed down a free-kick for Kane, but his ambitious overhead kick lacked the power to worry Blaswich.
The contest improved in the second half as both sides stepped up their attacking intent.
Leipzig was the first to threaten in the 53rd minute when Xavi Simons’s corner found Mohamed Simakan in space near the edge of the box, but his shot across goal went just the wrong side of the post.
Three minutes later, Bayern was ahead. Musiala slipped the ball through for Kane just inside the area and his first-time shot had the power to beat Blaswich.
Sesko soon had a chance to level as he broke into the box, but Neuer was quickly off his line to deny him.
However, there was nothing the Bayern goalkeeper could do soon after as the young Slovenia striker got the equaliser.
Neuer may well have had his shot from the edge of the box covered, but Leon Goretzka lunged in to try to block the ball, and a nick off the end of his boot sent it beyond the goalkeeper.
But there was a final twist to come in stoppage-time as Eric Choupo-Moting lifted the ball into the box and Kane fired in his 27th goal of the season to earn the win.
