Bayern thrashes Union to stay on title course
Serge Gnabry scored twice, with Michael Olise and Harry Kane also on target, as Bayern Munich dismantled Union Berlin with ease to win 4-0.
Bayern was fortunate to avoid conceding an early penalty, with Leon Goretzka fouling Rani Khedira just outside the area, before Lennart Karl sidefooted against the post and Kane passed up a glaring chance at the other end.
However, Vincent Kompany's men eventually made their dominance count with two goals in the space of three minutes shortly before half-time.
Olise cut inside and blasted beyond Frederik Ronnow to open the scoring in the 43rd minute, then a poor punch from the Union goalkeeper was punished by Gnabry at the start of stoppage-time.
Kane all but ended the contest with a curling finish four minutes into the second half, and it was 4-0 when Gnabry drilled past Ronnow at his near post in the 67th minute, with that chance arriving when Olise's shot was blocked after a fine piece of skill outside the area.
Kane somehow missed the opportunity to grab his brace late on, sending a dinked effort wide while one-on-one, but it did not matter as Bayern took another step towards retaining the title.
Bayern has now scored 97 league goals, four short of equalling the all-time club record in the 1971-1972 Bundesliga campaign.
"We will get the record but the priority for me is something else," Bayern coach Kompany said.
"I am not someone who likes talking about this record. I am not too interested. Your playing style does not stop because the season is coming to an end.
"We must never forget what our strengths are and keep bringing them to the pitch regardless of the opponent."
Bayern has a busy schedule in the coming weeks with a UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid and a DFB Pokal semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen.
"We want to keep getting better," Kompany said.
