Bayern sets goals record in rout of St Pauli
Bayern Munich edged closer to the Bundesliga title after a dominant 5-0 rout of relegation-threatened St Pauli.
Vincent Kompany's side moved 12 points clear at the summit with five games remaining, while it took its goal tally for the Bundesliga season to a staggering 105, setting a new record for a single German top-flight campaign, eclipsing their total of 101 from 1971-1972.
Bayern took just nine minutes to break the deadlock at Millerntor-Stadion, with Jamal Musiala heading home from Konrad Laimer's cross.
Musiala also hit the post just before the half-hour mark, before the visitors gave themselves breathing space with two quickfire goals after the restart.
First, Leon Goretzka volleyed in on 53 minutes and, just 75 seconds later, turned provider by feeding Michael Olise for a cool finish.
It was 4-0 in the 65th minute. Musiala also grabbed an assist as he slipped a pass through for Nicolas Jackson, who neatly slotted past Nikola Vasilj in the hosts' goal.
Jackson then turned provider two minutes from time, stealing possession inside the penalty area and teeing up Raphael Guerreiro for a fifth goal.
Goretzka saw a last-gasp header ruled out for offside after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, but Bayern is now just four points away from completing a successful title defence.
"I am satisfied with our performance and the result," Bayern coach Kompany said.
"St Pauli is a team that almost always defends very well and concedes few goals. It also have the ability for a counter-attack, which in this stadium can be a cause for concern.
"So what we did today here is not something that should be taken for granted."
It was a welcome start for Germany midfielder Musiala, under mounting pressure to get sufficient playing practice after his long injury absence because of a broken foot last year, and be ready for the FIFA World Cup.
"I felt very good today. I had better actions, and scored a goal," Musiala said.
"I'm taking every minute I can, every game does me a lot of good. Today was a step forward but there's still a way to go. My foot feels freer than a few weeks and months ago. I just need a bit more patience."
