Eric Ebimbe scored twice as the hosts ran riot against Thomas Tuchel’s side, rattling in all five goals within an hour of play to spark a party at Deutsche Bank Arena.

Omar Marmoush, Hugo Larsson and Ansgar Knauff also scored to complete a spectacular defeat for Tuchel, who had named his strongest possible side in a bid to bridge the gap on league leader Bayer Leverkusen.

Instead, Bayern’s shortcomings were brutally exposed by a Frankfurt side which had lost its past two Bundesliga games and also suffered an embarrassing midweek defeat to third-tier Saarbrucken in the DFB Pokal.

Not known for their goalscoring prowess having racked up just 19 goals in the campaign so far, the hosts kicked off on the front foot and snatched a 12th-minute lead through Marmoush.

The Egyptian striker was on hand to fire home from a rebound after an initial effort from Fares Chaibi slammed back from the crossbar.

Bayern rallied and should have drawn level in the 25th minute when Leon Goretzka threaded the ball through to Harry Kane but the in-form striker uncharacteristically fired wide with only Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp to beat.

The hosts made the visitors pay on the half hour as Ebimbe grabbed his first goal of the afternoon, picking up a pass from Knauff and jinking past two defenders before stabbing a shot past a hesitant Manuel Neuer.

Bayern was caught in possession again five minutes later, this time Joshua Kimmich the guilty party leaving Hugo Larsson to play a clever one-two with Marmoush before slotting home Frankfurt’s third.

The outstanding Ebimbe was busy at the other end to deflect an on-target Kane effort over the bar, but Bayern did drag itself back into the game just before half-time when Leroy Sane fed Kimmich, who atoned for his earlier error with a sensational long-range strike into the top corner.

Kimmich came close to reducing the deficit again early in the second half but the hosts made Bayern pay five minutes later when Chaibi capitalised on more defensive woe to release Ebimbe, who scored his second with a one-touch finish.

Eric Choupo-Moting blazed an effort over the bar but things got even worse for Bayern on the hour-mark as Knauff’s strike from a neat Marmoush ball over the top survived a VAR check to increase the home side’s lead.

The remaining half-hour was largely played out amid a carnival atmosphere and a string of substitutions as Tuchel opted to turn his focus to Bayern’s midweek UEFA Champions League clash with Manchester United.
