Host Morocco makes quarter-finals in top spot
Host Morocco qualified for the quarter-finals at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations after a narrow 1-0 win over Senegal in Group A.
Yasmin Mrabet scored the crucial goal from the penalty spot in stoppage-time at the end of the first half after Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye had elbowed Atlas Lionesses star Ghizlane Chebbak.
Ndiaye was booked for the challenge after a video assistant referee check when a red card looked more likely, but her good fortune didn't extend to keeping out Mrabet's perfect conversion of the spot-kick.
Both sides had chances in the second period, but Morocco was arguably the deserved winner and finishes top of the group ahead of Zambia, which beat 10-woman DR Congo 1-0 to seal its spot in the last eight.
Senegal could still qualify as a best-performing third-placed team, but it will have to wait for other results to play out in order to know its fate.
