Ronaldo banned for Supercopa meltdown
Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for five matches after being sent off and then pushing the referee in Real Madrid's 3-1 Supercopa de Espana first-leg victory over Barcelona on Monday (AEST).
Ronaldo received a one-match ban for his red card in Monday's Supercopa win and a four-match ban for pushing referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in the back.
The 32 year-old gave Madrid the lead with a stunning strike, before picking up a yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration. Two minutes later, the Portuguese star imploded - pushing the referee after he received a second yellow card for diving.
The federation ruling cited a violation of article 96 of its disciplinary code, which states that "light aggressions" defined as "pulling, pushing and shaking" of a referee are punished by suspensions of 4-12 matches.
Ronaldo was also fined $A8,000 for the indiscretion, and Real Madrid has 10 days to appeal the decision.
