Philadelphia Union adds major pieces with three top-six MLS SuperDraft picks
Philadelphia Union traded up for the second overall selection, and took a pair of Georgetown defenders with the second and third overall picks.
Philadelphia Union was clearly bullish on this year's MLS SuperDraft class.
After acquiring the sixth overall pick in a trade with Houston in December,Union traded for the second overall pick on Friday, leaving it with the second, third and sixth picks in the draft.
With the pick haul, Philadelphia rebuilt its defence, taking Josh Yaro from Georgetown with the second pick and his college teammate Keegan Rosenberry with the third overall selection.
Union was also able to address its front line as well, selecting Creighton forward Fabian Herbers with the sixth pick it received in the trade with Houston.
Though many expected Philadephia to take Stanford defender and recent U.S. national team call-up Brandon Vincent,Union instead opted for Rosenberry, who played right back at Georgetown next to Yaro at center back.
"It's awesome, I'm really happy that it happened that way because he's someone that I've grown to know and I know him not just as a player but a person as well," Yaro said. "It's someone I get along really well with so it's a great opportunity."
Yaro, listed at 5-foot-11, was seen as too short to play in the heart of the defence by some teams. With Phiadelphia taking a natural right back along with Yaro, it would seem to indicate the Union do see Yaro at his natural position.
"I see myself as a center back and that's something that I still look forward to but right now I'm just trying to enjoy the moment and take it all in," Yaro said. "When we get to preseason that's when everything will all start."
