Colombia wary of "quality" Chile
After Chile dismantled Mexico, many have La Roja down as the favourite. While Colombia doesn't see it that way, Los Cafeteros are prepared for a difficult contest.
Colombia is expecting a stiff test from Chile in the Copa America Centenario semi-final Thursday (AEST), even without Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal available for selection.
While Chile was comprehensive in its 7-0 dismantling of Mexico on Sunday (AEST), it won't be able to rely on the services of Vidal. Bayern's box-to-box midfielder was booked in the game, his second card of the tournament, which triggered a one-match suspension. But for Colombia forward Carlos Bacca, Chile is far more than simply Vidal.
"We know Vidal gives a lot to the Chilean national team but Chile has other great players, they’re a team," Bacca said at a news conference Monday. "I think individually, he gives them a lot, but they’re a group, a team that has done a lot of things.
"They’re the reigning champ. I think in a semifinal, there’s not a favorite. You’ve got to work, to give your best in this game, a game that’s going to be very even between the teams."
Colombia was unable to find the back of the net in its quarter-final with Peru, needing a penalty shootout to secure passage into the penultimate round. Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina was the hero, using his legs to stop a spot-kick taken by Miguel Trauco. Christian Cueva sent Peru's next kick off the mark, and Los Cafeteros were able to move on.
Though Vidal contributes to Chile's attack going forward, Ospina said the team will be looking out for Chile's other threats. Eduardo Vargas is the tournament's current leading goal-scorer with six, and Alexis Sanchez isn't far behind with three.
"We know the quality they have going forward, the speed they have, that they can go very quickly from defense to attack," Ospina said. "They’ve got players on the best teams in the world, so we’ve got respect for Chile. We’re playing this same way to try, going into this match with a lot of responsibility and trying to do things well."
