VIDEO | Marseille Will Seek Their Ticket to The Final in Bergamo
Marseille and Atalanta tied one goal apiece in the first leg of their Europa League semifinal. The home team tried to secure an advantage for the return match in Bergamo but was unsuccessful.
Driven by their enthusiastic fans, who dream of their sixth European final and first continental title since winning the European Cup in 1993, Marseille sought opportunities, but their forward line lacked precision against the well-organized Italian defense.
Marseille came out ambitious but lacked bite, and it was the Italians who struck first, with Gianluca Scamacca scoring in the 11th minute, his sixth goal of the season in European competition.
A precise pass from Koopmeiners found Scamacca completely unmarked, following a defensive error by Murillo, and the Italian took advantage to unleash a powerful shot with his right foot that Spanish goalkeeper Pau López could not stop.
The home team was shaken by the setback, but Mbemba leveled the score for Marseille after a corner kick.
The second half saw both teams seeking control of the game but failing to dominate. There were opportunities for both sides, but neither could convert.
Marseille started strongly in the second half but couldn't beat Musso in their goal attempts. Atalanta also had chances, but the match ended in a draw.
The semifinal will be decided on Thursday, May 9th, in Italy.
