Lunin or Courtois: Ancelotti's Big Question for the Champions League Final
The Real Madrid coach stated that they are still evaluating who will be the starting goalkeeper against Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti assessed the goalkeeping situation ahead of the Champions League final, admitting that Andriy Lunin "has had a fantastic season" while acknowledging Thibaut Courtois as "the best in the world when he's at his level."
The goalkeeping dilemma looms large for the starting lineup in the Champions League final, where Real Madrid faces Borussia Dortmund on June 1 at Wembley. Ancelotti doesn't hide the fact that he has given Courtois two consecutive league matches and confessed that he plans to give Lunin one more before deciding.
"Our goal is to have the entire squad in top form, and players who have recently returned, like Courtois and Militao, need minutes to get into rhythm. We're using these matches to give minutes to the rest, and the week before the final, we'll make the necessary decisions," he reflected.
"We're evaluating it. Lunin can also play one of these matches, give Kepa a chance to play a bit, but it's not that simple because there aren't many matches. I think exactly like you (the press), Lunin has had a fantastic season, and Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world when he's at his level," he added.
Ancelotti will have to weigh the state of the two goalkeepers with options to start, considering Lunin's journey and the importance Courtois has always had in the team.
"Lunin has helped us a lot, and I have to consider him, just as I have to consider that the best goalkeeper in the world is returning. He hasn't played in nine months, he needs minutes, and it's also very important to talk to the players and understand better what's going on," he concluded.
