Arsenal's Ongoing Struggle Against Bayern in European Competitions Raise Concerns
The Arsenal under Mikel Arteta will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, one of the teams that historically has given the "Gunners" the most trouble.
With the quarter-final matchups of the 2023-2024 Champions League defined, one of the matches raising the most questions is Arsenal against Bayern Munich. Historically, Arsenal has struggled when facing the German team, which is currently not in the best form.
In the British team's Champions League history, there have been some very painful defeats that have gone down in history, four to be specific. One of them was against AC Milan in the 2011-12 season, which ended 4-0. However, the other three painful losses were at the hands of the Bavarian team:
- 5-1 in 2015-16
- 5-1 in 2016-17 (first leg)
- 5-1 in 2016-17 (second leg)
The 2016-17 season in the knockout stage was a nightmare for Arsenal, as they conceded 10 goals in two matches and only scored two themselves, making that elimination one of the most painful in the club's history.
It's also important to mention Bayern's dominance over the British team in recent years. During the four times they have faced each other in knockout stages of the Champions League, the German team has managed to advance on each occasion.
On the other hand, Arsenal is currently playing well. Mikel Arteta has given the team a boost, leading them to temporarily lead the Premier League ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as reaching the Champions League quarter-finals. Additionally, Bayern Munich has had a drop in performance, as they haven't been playing at their best and have had difficulties in getting results. Could this be the season when Arsenal gets revenge and advances to the coveted semi-finals?
