OFFICIAL: Barcelona Renew Pau Cubarsí with Unpayable Clause
Barcelona announced on Thursday the renewal of young center-back Pau Cubarsí, one of the revelations of the football season, until June 2027, with a release clause of 500 million euros.
The center-back, who had a very affordable release clause - around 10 million euros, signed his new contract in a meeting with FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta; first vice president Rafa Yuste; responsible for the Youth Football, Joan Soler; and the club's sporting director, Anderson Luis de Souza "Deco."
Cubarsí (Estanyol (Girona, 2007) joined Barcelona as a child, in the summer of 2018, from Girona and has gone through all the youth teams.
He started this season as a youth player but in the Barça Atlètic dynamics. Under Rafa Márquez's orders, he played nine games before regularly joining the first team.
He also played for the Spanish national team in the Under-17 World Cup held in Indonesia in November, where he played alongside Héctor Fort or Marc Guiu, and also made his debut for the senior team in two friendly matches against Colombia and Brazil. With that debut, at 17 years and two months, he became the youngest defender in the history of the Spanish national team.
Since officially debuting with the first team, a Copa del Rey match against Unionistas de Salamanca (1-3), on January 18, he has played twenty games and is a key player for Xavi Hernández in the center-back position.
Cubarsí is a player from the 2007 generation, which also includes forward Lamine Yamal. His fluidity with the ball and positioning are reminiscent, albeit distantly, of Gerard Piqué.
Added to this, according to those who know him, is a maturity and humility reminiscent of legendary academy graduates like Andrés Iniesta and Carles Puyol. They say of him that he speaks little in the locker room and, when he does, it is with intelligence.
Following the renewals of Lamine Yamal, Fermín López, at the beginning of the season, and Pau Cubarsí, Barcelona is now considering the continuity of Sergi Roberto. Marcos Alonso's contract also expires, but his
future is not tied to the club. The continuity of loaned players Joao Cancelo and Joao Félix is yet to be determined.
