VIDEO | Copa Sudamericana 2024 Highlights: Boca Juniors vs Sportivo Trinidense
With a solitary goal from the youth defender Aaron Anselmino in the 71st minute, Boca Juniors secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sportivo Trinidense in the second matchday of Group D in the Copa Sudamericana.
With the win, the Argentine team temporarily topped the group with four points, while the Paraguayan side remained at the bottom without any points, awaiting Wednesday's match between Fortaleza and Nacional de Potosí to complete the second matchday.
The match saw Boca playing with one player less for almost 20 minutes due to Anselmino's injury in the 78th minute, after Boca had exhausted their substitutions. There was also controversy in the 80th minute regarding a possible penalty for handball by the Peruvian Luis Advíncula.
Boca Juniors entered the match boosted by their victory against Newell’s Old Boys on Saturday in the Copa de la Liga Profesional, but they failed to replicate a great performance against Trinidense and had to endure until the last minute to secure the win.
Meanwhile, the Paraguayan side, currently eleventh in the Paraguayan league standings, put on a good performance and managed to keep the scoreline goalless against Boca at La Bombonera for over 70 minutes.
During the first half, Boca had the opportunity to open the scoring, but the performance of goalkeeper Víctor Samudio and the lack of accuracy in the final third allowed the visiting team to go into halftime with the score level.
In the second half, Diego Martínez made changes to the home side, and after two chances with headers from defender Nicolás Valentini, they managed to break the deadlock, as well as two shots from Edinson Cavani.
The introduction of Kevin Zenón was crucial for Boca to change the rhythm, and in the 71st minute, a cross from Lautaro Blanco found Aaron Anselmino's precise header to beat Víctor Samudio and open the scoring.
Later, Boca made all their substitutions, and in the 78th minute, the goal scorer Anselmino got injured and had to leave the field, leaving Boca with ten players on the pitch.
In the next play, the entire visiting team protested a handball by Luis Advíncula in the area and a consequent penalty, which the Uruguayan referee Gustavo Tejera did not award after consulting the VAR.
In the end, it was a 1-0 victory for Boca against Sportivo Trinidense, looking ahead to the third matchday of Group D, where Boca will visit Fortaleza in Brazil and Sportivo Trinidense will host Nacional de Potosí.
