LDU Quito’s Manager Zubeldía Brims with Confidence Ahead of Copa Sudamericana Final
The 2023 Copa Sudamericana Final is set to grace screens across North America exclusively via beIN SPORTS. With the pre-match buildup commencing at 3:30PM ET / 12:30PM PT, anticipation is palpable. The prestigious club-soccer competition has been the South American answer to the UEFA Europa League since its inception in 2002, featuring an ensemble of the continent's elite teams.
This year, Fortaleza are set to lock horns with the decorated Ecuadorian team, LDU Quito. Boasting international accolades including victories in the Copa Sudamericana in 2009 and the Copa Libertadores in 2008, LDU Quito has further solidified its stature with 11 Ecuadorian Serie A titles. Their journey to the final in Maldonado, Uruguay, however, hasn't been a walk in the park. With nail-biting penalty shoot-outs in both the Last-16 and quarterfinals, the Ecuadorian giants have shown resilience and tenacity.
Adding to their firepower is the presence of well-known striker, Paolo Guerrero. At 39, the veteran Peruvian forward hopes to add one final feather to his already illustrious cap.
In a recent interaction, LDU Quito’s manager, Luis Zubeldía, shed light on his team's journey and preparations.
When asked about the impending final, Zubeldía radiated positivity, stating, "Firstly, we're obviously very happy to be in this position. One dreams of making it to the end and both teams will now want to play their best to lift the trophy. We're delighted to have overcome very complex stages. Starting from the first phase against Delfín, then progressing through the group stages, and later on facing challenges against Ñublense, Sao Paulo, and Defensa y Justicia. We've had a challenging yet rewarding journey, making us deserving finalists, just like Fortaleza."
Reflecting on his team's strengths, he shared, "I believe we've adhered to our gameplay principles throughout the tournament. Of course, these principles often depend on the context, including the opponent and the venue. We've displayed commendable away-game football, with divided outcomes, but our team's characteristics and principles were evident. Generally, in international cups, teams that stick to their core gameplay principles, regardless of the situation or opponent, are the ones reaching these stages."
On a personal note, considering it's another final for him, Zubeldía expressed, "I was trying to remember the last final I was a part of. Honestly, I'm not great with memories or dates, but if I'm not mistaken, this is the second Sudamericana final for us in the last four years, which fills us with joy. I've been with Lanús, which feels like home, and now with LDU Quito, a club I deeply cherish. So, the responsibility is twofold, but we're optimistic about delivering a great final."
As both teams gear up for the climax of the 2023 Copa Sudamericana, fans worldwide wait with bated breath to see if LDU Quito can add another trophy to their glittering cabinet.
