VIDEO | Libertadores 2024 Highlights: Colo-Colo vs Fluminense
With a goal from central defender Manoel, Brazilian side Fluminense defeated Colo-Colo (0-1), who dominated and outplayed their opponent in a packed Monumental stadium, thereby taking another step towards advancing to the Round of 16 in a tight Group A of the Copa Libertadores.
In the only shot on target they had in the second half, Fernando Diniz's team broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with a header from central defender Manoel, following a corner kick, assisted by star player Marcelo.
The victory keeps Fluminense at the top with eight points, Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño is now second with five points, one more than Colo-Colo, while Alianza Lima closes with three.
Fluminense appeared as a disoriented champion, cornered in their own area by Colo-Colo, where the hosts played most of both halves in the opponent's half of the field, maintaining danger around the rival's area but failing to convert goals.
The clearest chance, in the second half, was a shot from midfielder Vicente Pizarro from outside the box that hit the left post of Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio in the 65th minute.
The lack of clarity in the box affected the albo team, which played its best match of the continental tournament to date and now jeopardizes its chances, as they will have to play away in the last two matches.
Almost all of the "Cacique's" shots were off target, the first of which came as early as the 2nd minute, also from Vicente Pizarro, and as the clock ticked, the unsuccessful attempts of Cristián Zavala, Esteban Pavez, and Uruguayan central defender Maximiliano Falcón piled up.
Goalkeeper Fabio remained under constant threat, but he intervened only once in an opportunity that forward Damián Pizarro had inside the box, in the first half, which he stopped without problems.
"Flu" crowded many men in the box and defended their zone well, making it very difficult for the home team to aim low.
When given the chance, the tricolor team resorted to long balls behind the albo defenders without success, and their first shot on target in the first half came around the 44th minute with a free-kick from Marquinhos that went over the goal.
In the next match, Fluminense hosts Cerro Porteño at the Maracanã, while Colo-Colo visits Peruvian side Alianza Lima.
