Junior defeated Botafogo 1-3 in the closing match of Matchday 1 in Group D, placing themselves as the group leaders, while Botafogo did not start their journey in the Copa Conmebol Libertadores in the best way and sits at the bottom of the group. An impressive brace from Carlos Bacca and another goal from Gabriel Fuentes secured the victory for the visitors. Hugo Gonçalves scored for the hosts.
Junior faced an unrecognizable Botafogo at Nilton Santos and took advantage of the opportunities the opponent gave away to dominate the match from the first half. With Bacca's goal in the 13th minute from the penalty spot and another from Fuentes in the 28th minute, the visiting team dominated in the Brazilian's home. To close out a perfect matchday, Carlos Bacca completed his brace in the 41st minute. In the second half, Gonçalves reduced the deficit and motivated his team, but it was not enough for a comeback.
