River Plate's Club World Cup Journey Hinges on The Libertadores
Club Libertad of Paraguay will cling to their last chance of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores round of 16. To achieve this, they must defeat River Plate, who not only seeks passage to the next round but also their inclusion in the 2025 Club World Cup.
The team led by Martín Demichelis, Group H leaders with 10 points, will try to put behind them the draw suffered in the last match against their pursuer, Nacional from Uruguay (7 points), after leading 2-0 and ending up drawing 2-2 in Montevideo.
After the failure in the Argentine League Cup, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by their arch-rivals Boca Juniors, River Plate began their participation in the Professional League Tournament with a resounding victory against Central Córdoba (3-0) and sits as the leader.
It is expected that, facing a crowd that will once again fill the Monumental Stadium, Martín Demichelis will field the Colombian Miguel Ángel Borja as the leader of the attack, alongside Facundo Colidio, who scored two goals this weekend. Esequiel Barco, who completed the rout, will compete for a starting spot with Claudio Echeverri.
A victory for River Plate, like the one obtained in Asunción (1-2) in the third matchday of this group stage, would secure their qualification to the round of 16 and to the renewed Club World Cup, which will feature 32 teams in 2025.
Meanwhile, Club Libertad will go all out in Buenos Aires, as their four points make their survival in the continent's top club tournament very difficult without a victory, in a group that also includes the already eliminated Deportivo Táchira.
