Manchester City Could Miss Out On Champions League
Manchester City finds itself in a dilemma as the current European champion could miss out on next season's Champions League if it fails to demonstrate that it does not share ownership with Girona, a Spanish club that will also participate in the European tournament. Both teams belong to the City Football Group.
The new UEFA competition regulations require Girona and Manchester City to prove by June 3rd that they comply with the multi-ownership rule, to eliminate potential conflicts of interest and prevent any individual or entity from having control or "decisive influence" and coinciding in the next Champions League.
A document from UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) explains the multi-ownership rule (MCO) as outlined in Article 5 of the competition regulations, stating that in case of doubt about compliance, the case will be examined by this body, which will decide on the admission to competitions of the clubs involved.
If a solution is not reached before this date, neither Pep Guardiola's team nor the marvel team of La Liga will be able to compete in the next edition of the Champions League.
However, UEFA considers a temporary and exceptional alternative only for the next season in case of non-compliance with the aforementioned, given the short time frame between the approval of the competition regulations and the June 3rd deadline.
Therefore, both Manchester City and Girona could still hope to compete in the next European Cup...
