14-Year-Old Surpasses Maradona and "Kun" Agüero
A 14-year-old boy officially made his debut in Argentine football with Deportivo Riestra.
Mateo Apolonio, a 14-year-old youngster, debuted in the Argentine first division towards the end of the Copa Argentina round of 32 match between Deportivo Riestra and Newell’s.
Cristian Fabbiani, Riestra's head coach, mentioned before the match that they would use young players since their priority is the league; "We will go with substitutes and some youth players because our priority is the league, maintaining our category," stated Fabbiani.
In this way, the young Mateo surpassed the record held by Sergio "Kun" Agüero after debuting in the first division with Independiente at 15 years old, one month, and three days, a record that at the time, surpassed that of Diego Armando Maradona at 16 years and five months.
In the end, Newell’s secured a 1-0 victory over Riestra in a match played at the Presbítero Bartolomé Grella Stadium.
