Algeria and Burkina Faso were battling for the top spot in Group D after a disappointing start for the Desert Foxes, drawing 1-1 against Angola. On the other hand, Burkina Faso's Stallions kicked off on the right foot, winning 1-0 against Mauritania, ending the first Group D day as leaders and a tournament surprise.
In the first half, Algeria, trying to get back on track offensively, had more than six shots, but only a few hit the target. Their efficiency was their worst enemy, unlike the Stallions, who, with their only shot on goal, found the net against Algeria, going ahead by one at halftime.
The second half saw Algeria's offensive efforts pay off, equalizing five minutes into the half. A defensive error didn't go unnoticed by VAR, awarding Burkina Faso a penalty. They regained the lead in the 71st minute with their third shot on goal, which they held within their own area.
Yet, the story took another turn with nine minutes of added time. In the 90+5 minute, from a corner kick, Bounedjah scored his double, the third goal in AFCON 2023, securing the draw for his country. Both teams left with an extra point on the table, Burkina Faso as the temporary leader and Algeria in second place with only two points. Everything will be decided in the last Group D match.
