The Egyptian Football Federation (EFA) Dismisses Rui Vitória Dollowing the AFCON Debacle
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced today the dismissal of its coach, Portuguese Rui Vitória, following the debacle in the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Egyptian team did not win any matches and was eliminated in the round of 16.
The EFA explained in a statement that the board made the decision after meeting with the coach and assessing his performance in the Africa Cup of Nations. They also mentioned that they are considering several profiles of foreign coaches to replace him.
Until then, the Federation has appointed Mohamed Yousef as interim coach, who will remain in charge "until a foreign technical director is selected." Rui Vitória, 53, was appointed as Egypt's coach in July 2022 and signed a four-season contract. The Portuguese had previous experience as a coach in the Arab region when he took over the Saudi club Al Nasr (2019-2020), although most of his coaching career has been in his native Portugal, where he led Benfica (2015-2019), among others.
His last club as a coach was Spartak Moscow, although his tenure lasted only from May to December 2021 when he left the club by mutual agreement with the board. Vitória thus joins a long list of coaches who have been fired by the EFA due to the poor results of the Egyptian team in continental and world competitions in recent years.

The Portuguese replaced Egyptian Ehab Galal in 2022, who only stayed in the position for two months, replacing veteran Carlos Queiroz, who was in charge of the technical direction for eight months.
