Koulibaly on AFCON 2023: "This Edition Gonna be The Best Ever"
The arrival of the current African Cup of Nations champions in the host country, Ivory Coast, has stirred up excitement with the first words from their captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, who shared his thoughts on what to expect from this tournament.
"I think this Ivory Coast edition will be the best in the history of the competition, as all the top-notch teams are here and fully geared up," declared the Senegalese, riding high from their performance in the last World Cup and the overall growth of African football.
When asked about what AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast will leave for the future, the Teranga Lions' captain commented, "It'll showcase the true picture of African football, and I believe whoever clinches the title in the end will truly deserve it."
Senegal comes in as the reigning African champions after winning the last edition in a penalty shootout against Egypt to secure their first AFCON title. With over 10 players from that 2021 squad in this edition, Senegal's hopes remain high. That's why Captain Koulibaly urged the fans, saying, "I'm asking for your support at every moment; that encouragement will take us far and will have its rewards."
Senegal is placed in one of the toughest groups in AFCON 2023, alongside the five-time AFCON winner Cameroon, always resilient Guinea, and an ambitious Gambia looking to cause upsets. The Teranga Lions will kick off their campaign against Gambia on Monday, January 15, aiming to begin the journey to defend their throne as the kings of Africa.
