Ghana Fire Chris Hughton After Group Stage Exit in AFCON
The Ghana Football Association has announced the dismissal of its coach after failing to qualify their team for the knockout stage of the tournament.
The Ghana Football Association officially announced the dismissal of Chris Hughton as the national team coach hours after the elimination of the 'Black Stars' from AFCON 2023.
"Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as the head coach with immediate effect," stated the Federation in a statement released through its social media channels.
After securing only two points in the three matches of their group, Ghana's only hope was to finish as one of the best third-placed teams, but Cameroon's dramatic victory over Gambia dashed any chances of qualification.
Ghana's elimination, one of the teams expected to go far in the tournament, became the trigger that ultimately cost the former coach, who had previously managed teams like Newcastle and Brighton, his position.
Hughton had been in the role since February 2023, taking over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed after Ghana's poor performance in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where they finished last in their group.
